Referee's Signal Number 8 - First Down

First Down

When used

This signal is used by the Referee to denote that a team has a First Down, either by moving the ball past the line-to-gain marker for the team in possession, or to the opposing team when the line-to-gain has not been reached after the requisite number of downs or after an interception or fumble recovery.

How executed

The signalling hand should start at the shoulder and be projected forward and slightly upwards in an unhurried manner, and you should be facing in the direction that the team who has the first down will be playing.
