DISCIPLINARY UPDATE

Last week’s Newsflash (7/25) reported that Brunel Burners player Cole McFarlane, was disqualified from a game for a Flagrant Personal Foul. However the disqualification has been cancelled after an appeal committee reviewed the case and concluded the foul did not meet the criteria for a Flagrant Foul.

New this week

Cambridge Pythons

Well-marked field, but team areas marked to 25-yard lines.

Brian Yates #29

22nd March 2026 v Coventry University Jets

Coventry University Jets

No staff could be found to lock the changing room, as is usually the case at this venue. The field was well marked in blue, although it contained an extra set of inbounds markings (wider than the standard set) and short yard-line extension at the sidelines alternated between being connected to and separate from the sideline.

Joel Pearson #405

Unknown

Edinburgh Napier Knights

No limit lines. No nine-yard marks or numbers.

Henry Richardson #25

Unknown

Hertfordshire Hurricanes

90-yard field marked in blue. Hashmarks marked at the correct width and feinter hashmarks marked at NFL-width were both present. No numbers or nine-yard marks. No limit lines. Coaching boxes and team areas were marked with cones. One ball person was changed at half time.

Peter Parsons #321

15th March 2026 v Bournemouth Bobcats

KCL Regents

80-yard field where the short yard-line extensions required repainting prior to kick-off. Team areas were marked with cones on one side of the field. Two small changing rooms were provided. However, after the game, one of the rooms was locked, and it was apparent that the other room was in use by someone else who had left their kit in there. There were changes to the chain crew and ball assistants at half time. The field was incredibly muddy, with many patches void of grass. Oliver Maskell #221

Lancashire Rams

Several other sports markings were present, with some in close proximity to the endzones. Team areas were missing but marked out using cones.

David Hewitt #607

LJMU Fury

Kick off was delayed by ten minutes while the posts at one end were forcibly hammered into the ground. Eventually, the posts were playable, albeit slightly askew. A ball was kicked over the fence behind one goal post onto the grass verge beside the B5312 - it is suspected that a local ne'er-do-well took it before the ball-person was able to retrieve it. A fourth ball was sourced, causing no major disruption. No three-yard marks. No nine-yard marks. Team areas were marked with cones. Essentially, the field just met the absolute minimum standard and no more. Stuart Young #33

Oxford Saints

100-yard field marked in blue on a good artificial surface. There were no team area markings.

Simon Ryan #408

Unknown

Oxford Saints (U19)

Poor communication between the Senior team and Junior team. The Senior game finished at 16:30, and the Junior team tried to make use of the officials without allowing their rule-mandated 30-minute break. The second contest was essentially a scrimmage of 10-play drives per side, with both scrimmage downs and kicking plays. The officials took a short break before rejoining the contest. This contest ended shortly before 18:00 as the facility was due to close. Simon Ryan #408

QMBL Vipers

QMBL have a new groundskeeper who has relocated the goal posts at one end of the field to make it 100 yards. However, the field was still marked to 90 yards. The field also had a solid line down the inside of the inbounds markings, but this was not an issue and partially helped with spotting the ball. No team areas were marked, but coaches generally stayed within the 20-yard lines. There was one brief stoppage to fix the chain set, as well as a few minor delays while the chain crew got themselves situated. The sideline yardage markers did not keep themselves up, which caused a couple of delays with spotting the ball for kick-offs and touchbacks.

Daniel Clarke #311

22nd March 2026 v Swansea Titans

Reading Knights

During the third quarter, one ball lost pressure, and a replacement was sought.

Stuart Tabberer #348

22nd March 2026 v UWE Bullets 2

Swansea Titans

90-yard field. Markings were in black and very faint in places. Team areas were marked with cones.

Euan Paterson #165

Unknown

York Centurians

100-yard field marked in blue, with no numbers or nine-yard marks. No pylons at the hash marks extended. Team areas were marked with cones. The changing rooms were not available immediately on arrival as they were being used as a storeroom. The changing room was also quite a walk from the field and did not lock. Two members of the chain crew had to be replaced at half time as they were not performing to an acceptable standard.

Dave Black #574

22nd March 2026 v Lancaster Bombers

Outstanding items from previous weeks

Brunel Burners

The changing rooms are a long walk from the field.

Keith Wickham #423

15th March 2026 v Warwick Wolves

Durham Saints

No marks or nine-yard marks. No team or coaching boxes marked. No limit lines.

Henry Richardson #25

15th March 2026 v Loughbrough Students

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: 4th & 25 at the A-45, Punter A-7 punts the ball away and returner B-83 returns the ball to the A-10 yard line where he is tackled. Team A had five players in the backfield at the snap.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: The game is being played with a Video Judge. 1st and 10 at Midfield, there are 1:30 seconds left in the game. The clock is not running, the score is tied. Team A attempt a pass play and it is intercepted by B38 at the B-29. B38 returns the ball to A’s end zone for a Touchdown.

After the play the video judge reviews the pay and sees clear evidence of a false start prior to the snap.

Ruling: After the review the play will be changed. A 5-yard penalty will be enforced and Team A will have retain possession of the ball. It will be 1st and 14 at the A-25, the play clock will be set to 25 seconds and the game clock will start on the snap.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: Team A 3rd & 5 at Midfield. Tight End A83 is lined up to the left of the formation. Defensive End B91 lines up immediately opposite A83

Team A attempt a sweep to the right hand side of the field. A83 charges takes one step forward and attempts to block B91. A83 is out of position and blocks B91 in the back.

Running back A25 gains 6 yards before he is pushed out of bounds at the B-44 yard line.

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: On a 6C crew, where should the Centre Judge stand on a field goal attempt?

Answer: The Centre Judge should be in position about one yard behind the goal post nearest the press box. They are responsible for ruling whether the ball passes inside their upright.
