BUCS SEASON RULES AND REGULATIONS
With the start of the BUCS season last weekend, a quick reminder of the situation about rules and regulations for that competition.
The 2024 rule changes that we are now familiar with may not be familiar to BUCS coaches or players.
Please note that there have been two changes to the BUCS regulations about minimum numbers:
Without those - no game. As we've said before, a team will most often obviously meet or not meet these numbers, so you will probably only get involved to verify a borderline case.
During the game, the numbers may drop to as low as 11 players and 1 Level 1 coach with no problem, but the game would be suspended (and perhaps abandoned) if either dropped lower.
These are the only changes to the competition-specific regulations.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

New this week | ||
Cardiff Cobras | 90-yard field. Cardiff addressed the issues from last week; having re-marked the field the visibility of the lines is improved. They have also invested in a new metal chain, although one of the stakes is still bent. No nine-yard marks. Coaches and team areas were marked out in cones only. The goals at this venue are some 5 yards off the end line, so padding is not required here. Amir Brooks #593 | 3rd November 2024 v SGS Pride |
Leeds Gryphons | 90-yard field marked in yellow; with other sports markings very noticeable. The end lines at both ends of the field used the rugby lines, which were in white. No team or coaches’ areas were marked, but both teams were very respectful of the limits they marked with cones. Lee Taylor #183 | 27th October 2024 v Newcastle Raiders |
Newcastle Raiders | No limit lines. No nine-yard marks or numbers. There were several other sports markings on the field including some in close proximity to the end zones. David Hewitt #607 | 1st December 2024 v Warwick Wolves |

PLAY OF THE WEEK: | |
New this week | Play: Team A Kick Off from their own 35 yard line. Immediately after the kick B99 blocks the kicker at the A-36. B-88 subsequently catches the ball at the B-10 and advances to the B-25 where he is tackled.
|
Last week | Play: Third and 15 at the A-2. Quarterback A11 drops back to pass. About to be tackled in the endzone, they throw the ball forward to an area where there are no eligible receivers. Tackle A72 catches the pass at the A-1 and is tackled at the A-3.

MECHANICS: | |
New this week | Game Situation: The game is played at a venue with only one stand at the side of the field. The game is not being broadcast. The home team select to use the sideline opposite this stand. While the Head Linesman is briefing the chain crew. The Home Team Head Coach states “we want the chains run on the other side of the field so they don’t get in our way”.
|
Last week | Game Situation: Upon arrival at the venue, the officials notice that there are lines extending the full width of the field every 4 yards not 5, and there are only 3 short yard extensions lines between each of these lines. Answer: The game should not start until this is corrected. If it cannot be corrected within a reasonable time-frame, the game should be abandoned (1-2-1). |
