PROOFREADERS AND CHECKERS WANTED

Production is underway for the 2025 edition of the rulebook. Most NCAA changes have been incorporated, the IFAF rule change process is in progress, and the BAFA Rules Committee is about to ponder our national variations. I aim to get the IFAF rulebook out before Christmas, with the BAFA rulebook finished in the New Year.

If you would be willing to proofread and check some sections, please let me know. The more people who volunteer, the less each person needs to do. You don't have to be a rules expert to do this. However, it is a good way to learn the rules at a very detailed level, so even rookie officials would be able to do it. Full instructions are provided.

To volunteer, please email me at rules@britishamericanfootball.org.

NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

Cardiff Cobras

The field markings continue to be very faint and the chain set was not 10-yards long.

Keith Wickham #423

20th October v Birmingham Lions

Team Scotland (U19)

A lot of effort was put into this fixture and it showed, from the marking of the field to the officials changing facilities. The crew even had reserved parking spaces. There was a good crowd, it was a great advert for the game, both teams should be proud

Gordon Galloway #7

Unknown

Team South (U19)

One brief stoppage for the repair of the chain. Additionally, the down box was still unable to show first down. This appears unlikely to be fixed soon.

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: Third and 15 at the A-2. Quarterback A11 drops back to pass. About to be tackled in the endzone, they throw the ball forward to an area where there are no eligible receivers. Tackle A72 catches the pass at the A-1 and is tackled at the A-3.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: There are four seconds left on the clock in the third quarter. Team A kick-off from the A-35. B33 catches the ball at the B-12 and runs to the B-22 where he is tackled. A1 was offside at the kick. Time expires during Team A’s free kick.

Ruling: Either, five yards from the previous spot and the free-kick is repeated or, 1st and 10 for Team B at the B-27. The period is over, as the period is not extended in either case. (3-2-3-a)

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: Upon arrival at the venue, the officials notice that there are lines extending the full width of the field every 4 yards not 5, and there are only 3 short yard extensions lines between each of these lines.

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: During the game Team A take a timeout. Both Teams huddle near their respective side lines. On a 5 man crew what should each official do during the timeout.

Answer: The Referee should inform the offensive captain of the time and the number of timeouts his team has remaining. The Umpire should remain with the ball at the succeeding spot, he should also inform both Wing Officials when approximately 15 seconds remain in the timeout. Both Wing Officials should inform the Head Coach of the team on their side of the field of the number of timeouts remaining for each team and the time remaining. They should also stand near enough to the huddling players so that they can inform them when approximately 15 seconds of the timeout remain. The Back Judge should inform the defensive captain of the time and the number of timeouts his team has remaining (M17.1.9).
