East Kilbride Pirates (U19)

Due to a midi rugby tournament, the officials had to change in a meeting room as a contingency. While recently remarked, the field had a couple of wobbly five-yard lines. Despite these minor issues, an excellent semi final was played by two well matched teams with a good crowd and gameday experience including commentary. The whole crew enthused about what a great advert for the sport and U19 football it had been.

Hashmarks and goals were NCAA width, not NFHS. Chains broke once. Changing room very small.

Brian Yates #29

Oxford Saints

100-yard field with numbers, but no team areas or limit lines. Field markings are in a faded blue. In the fourth quarter, the game was suspended for approximately 15 minutes to treat an injured player.

Rushmoor Knights (U19)

The goal posts were mounted on football goals and so were too wide.

Outstanding items from previous weeks

Sandwell Steelers

A barely legal 90-yard field with seven-yard end zones (only just). The field had been slit drained and this lead to some ridges across the surface, none were deemed to pose a trip hazard. A couple of large holes were repaired prior to kickoff.

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: 4th and Goal at the B-5 yard line. Team A are trailing by 3 points. 3 seconds remain in the game. Quarterback A12 drops back to pass, as he starts his throwing motion his arm is hit by defensive end B98, who does no touch the ball. The contact with the passers arm affects the direction of the pass, and the ball first hits offensive lineman B51 on the back of the helmet and then the ball then bounces high into the air, it is then caught by Wide Receiver A89 in the endzone. Time expired during the down.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: On a 4 man crew, Player A34 is in position to catch a forward pass near the sideline.  He jumps to catch the ball and comes down with it either in or out of bounds.  How should a covering wing official watch the play in order to ensure the best possible coverage of the action?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: When should the Referee give a preliminary signal following a penalty? What should the other officials be doing while the Referee is giving a preliminary signal?

Answer: The Referee should give a preliminary signal when the enforcement of a penalty is not obvious (M19.3.1.c). If the decision is Obvious - no preliminary signal should be given.

While the Referee is giving a preliminary signal, the Wing and Deep Wing officials on the sideline of the non-offending team should explain to the Head Coach what the foul was and what options he has. They should then convey his decision to the Referee (preferably via Radio) (M19.3.2).
