New this week

Bristol Aztecs

Kick-off was delayed by approximately 15 minutes due to late arrival of the visiting team. Field markings are in thin yellow lines that can be difficult to see in direct sunlight. Some of the five-yard lines were noticeably crooked. Inbounds and sideline markings were very short. No nine-yard marks. Team areas were marked out with cones.

Amir Brooks #593

Unknown

Cambridgeshire Cats

Team areas marked to 25-yard lines

Brian Yates #29

Unknown

Darlington Steam

Generally well-marked field, using IFAF yards. No team area or coaching boxes, so these were marked with cones. Goal posts were soccer goals with poles attached. The chains had to be adjusted pregame to match the field markings. Crew had to wait for a team to vacate the changing room to be able to change and no rooms were lockable. All footballs required inflation.

Liam Wooton #478

Unknown

East Kent Mavericks

90-yard field with seven-yard end zones well marked in blue with other sports markings in white, red, and yellow. No limit lines, numbers, or nine-yard marks. Team areas were the incorrect size and the coaching lines were at the incorrect depth. Good size, lockable changing room.

Darren Urben (438

Unknown

Edinburgh Wolves

The field was marked in red and coaches boxes marked with cones. The changing room, whilst big enough for a crew of five, was not lockable. Chains needed to be repaired twice during the game.

Gordon Galloway #7

Unknown

Glasgow Tigers

90-yard field. No numbers or nine-yard marks.

Henry Richardson #25

Unknown

Hertfordshire Cheetahs (NWFL)

Two adequately marked 7v7 fields. Both fields had down box operators. Coaches box marked out with cones.

Darren Urben #438

Unknown

Plymouth Vanguard

80-yard field with seven-yard End Zones. Well marked out and in good condition. Very cooperative game day management. Changing rooms were very small and officials were allowed to use vacated home team changing room for briefings.

Dave Moore #92

Unknown

Sandwell Steelers

A barely legal 90-yard field with seven-yard end zones (only just). The field had been slit drained and this lead to some ridges across the surface, none were deemed to pose a trip hazard. A couple of large holes were repaired prior to kickoff.

Stuart Tabberer #348

25th August 2024 v Staffordshire Surge

Sussex Thunder

Field was marked the previous day by the council and had multiple errors. It was >40 yards too wide, missing short yard-line extensions, and the hash marks were set to the width of the field. Sussex rectified many of the issued pregame but this meant some of the lines were not straight and were quite thin. The hash marks were around where the nine-yard marks should be so marks were drawn along the field to assist proper lateral spotting. The Chain that the crew were presented was broken and had to be fixed by the HL and BJ before the game. Changing rooms at Sussex Thunder are well below where they need to be. Although the room is spacious, it is very dirty and not lockable. The toilet facilities are dirty and without basic amenities and the shower room is a walk down a publicly accessible corridor.

U19 North Playoffs

Game1 had a potential clash of jerseys of orange and red. The changing facility for the female officials was a store room.

U19 South Playoffs

Field was marked in cones. No down boxes provided. Not enough pylons but the missing ones were replaced with orange cones. After an injury to one official after the first game, one crews operated as a crew of two for the remaining games. In the Rushmoor Vs Blitz game, the second half was shortened to 0 minutes due to Blitz being unable to field a side for the remainder of the game.

Outstanding items from previous weeks

Edinburgh Wolves

Team areas were marked with cones. Chains needed to be repaired before the first play of the game. Officials changing room, despite being big enough, was not lockable and to get there had to be navigated through a plethora of sports equipment.

Gordon Galloway #7

11th August 2024 v Manchester Titans

Tamworth Phoenix

No nine-yard marks or numbers. No team areas were marked. First-class game management and sideline crew, chains, and ball persons.

Brian Yates #29

11th August 2024 v East Kilbride Pirates

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: During the first possession series of an pxtra period, A10 throws a forward pass and Team A is flagged for an illegal shift. B25 intercepts the pass, and B38 clips before B25 crosses Team A’s goal line.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: 4th and 12 at the A-35. Team A lines up in scrimmage kick formation and intends to punt. immediately after the snap, B55 grabs Right Tackler A77 and pulls him to the side and B21 shoots the gap in an attempt to block the punt. The punter gets the punt away and the ball is downed at the B-35.

Ruling: Team A’s ball, 1st and 10 at the A-45. This is Defensive Holding by B55. This foul occurred before the kick and the penalty is not governed by post-scrimmage kick enforcement. The 10-yard penalty will be enforced from the previous spot and includes an automatic first down. (9-3-4-d)

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: When should the Referee give a preliminary signal following a penalty? What should the other officials be doing while the Referee is giving a preliminary signal?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: Three separate rules refer to "striking" an opponent: how do we decide which foul to call?

Answer: (M3.5.7.a) Three rules talk about "striking" an opponent.

  • (Personal foul (Rule 9-1-2-a): Normally use this for action that occurs while the ball is live. Unless the action could cause catastrophic injury, don’t regard it as flagrant.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct (Rule 9-2-1-a-1-j): Normally use this for action that occurs in the aftermath of a play.
  • Fighting (Rules 2-32-1 and 9-5-1): Normally reserve this for more serious, more severe, more prolonged action. It is unlikely that a single strike constitutes a fight. If in doubt, it is not fighting
