NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

Edinburgh Wolves

Team areas were marked with cones. Chains needed to be repaired before the first play of the game. Officials changing room, despite being big enough, was not lockable and to get there had to be navigated through a plethora of sports equipment.

Gordon Galloway #7

11th August 2024 v Manchester Titans

Gateshead Senators

Coaches’ and team areas were not far enough away from sidelines and marked to 25-yard lines. Both goal posts were heavily slanted. Both teams wore dark jerseys (red and orange), despite home team game management being advised, earlier in the week, that the away team would wear white. Despite being similar there was enough of a distinction between two not to cause too much of a problem.

Shawn Sombati #15

Unknown

Highland Stags

Some different coloured lines left over from previous days U16 tournament, but otherwise well marked. Game suspended for 45 minutes to allow treatment to injured player

Kenneth Glover #71

Unknown

Highland Wildcats (U16)

Lines were shared with 11s field so both white and yellow markings present.

Kenneth Glover #71

Unknown

Ipswich Cardinals (U19)

At the 2 minute warning the, Ipswich Team didn't have enough players to finish the game so after consultation with the Warriors coach the time remaining in the period was reduced to 0:00 and the game ended.

Larry Rigby (269

Unknown

Leeds Chargers (NWFL)

90-yard field marked in white. Short yard-line extensions at the sidelines were too short and not consistently spaced spaced.

Andrew Swift #403

Unknown

Leigh Miners

This is marked as a 100-yard field using non standard (IFAF) yards. In reality it is an 88-yard field with 11-yard endzones (using standard yards). Leight were advised to consider marking as a full size 90-yard field with 10-yard endzones next season. Chains were shortened to accommodate the field markings. Goals (rugby posts) are offset a half yard outside the endlines. The quality of the field marking was excellent, especially coaches’ box and team areas being the required distance; giving wing officials a good area to work. Sadly the medical provision was poor for both teams with the provider being slow to respond. Happily no serious injuries and thanks to both teams physios who were very supportive.

Mike Cavanagh #465

Unknown

London Olympians

Field had been re-marked to 100 yards with ten–yard end zones. Unfortunately the goals were now five yards deep in the end zone and immoveable, so the goal lines were moved to the five-yard lines and the field shortened to 90 yards. Field marked faintly in blue with other sport markings in white and yellow. No numbers, limit lines, or coaching lines and inbounds lines at incorrect depth (approximately 54 feet). Rugby markings approximated for nine-yard marks and team area lines. Two changing rooms were provided; one was a good size for a crew of five and the other had private toilet and shower facilities but neither was lockable.

Tim Ockendon #481

Unknown

Manchester Titans

80-yard field. Three-yard marks were both not at three yards. Team areas were marked out between the 25-yard lines. Several other sports markings were present and, on some occasions, complicated ball spotting. There were several changes of officials assistants. Thanks are extended to the Newcastle medic for her treatment to the umpire's injury prior to kick off.

David Hewitt #607

4th August 2024 v Edinburgh Wolves

Manchester Titans (U19)

80-yard field. Three-yard marks were both not at three yards. Team areas were marked out between the 25-yard lines. Several other sports markings were present and, on some occasions, complicated ball spotting. The chains broke on one occasion.

David Hewitt #607

Unknown

Northants Knights (U19)

Teams not wearing contrasting jerseys. Both teams were wearing grey tops. The only identifier was Northants players were wearing white pants. The visiting team were given the option of changing, but had only brought one set of jerseys.

Gerry Mellough #79

Unknown

Nuneaton Jaguars (U16)

Extremely faintly marked in white. Five-yard & 12-yard marks were delineated with cones.

Perry Wayman #504

Unknown

Oxford Saints (U16)

Two pitches played across the regular 11s field. Due to this, the sidelines in the endzone and the end lines were not present and marked by pylons. No down box operators were presented to the crew. The game between Poole and Solent was suspended for 15 minutes in the second half due to a head injury to a Poole player.

Kieran Smith #102

Unknown

Portsmouth Dreadnoughts

Field markings were in blue and on grass that was long. The field surface was uneven in places. The changing room was not lockable but had private toilet facilities and showers.

Richard Moger #472

Unknown

Sheffield Giants

Team areas were not painted, but were marked with cones. Pylons for the hash marks extended were only present at one end. Otherwise, a well-marked 90-yard field.

Paul Todd #289

Unknown

Sheffield Giants (U19)

Team areas were not painted, but were marked with cones. Pylons for the hash marks extended were only present at one end. Otherwise, a well-marked 90-yard field. Paul Todd #289

Somerset Wyverns

Changing rooms only suitable for two officials. The adjacent meeting room was used instead. Euan Paterson #165

South London Renegades (U19)

Unfortunately the goals were now five yards deep in the end zone and immoveable, so the goal lines were moved to the five-yard lines and the field shortened to 90 yards. Tim Ockendon #481

Staffordshire Surge

Field marking very faint; team areas marked very close to the sidelines.

Andrew Lovell #559

28th July 2024 v Lancashire Wolverines

Wakefield District Raiders

Well marked 80-yard field, however inbounds markings towards home sideline had a noticeable curve as you looked down the field. Due to an overnight break-in, the home team we unable to provide game balls, however the away team we able to provide 3 suitable balls prior to kickoff.

Henry Richardson #25

4th August 2024 v Merseyside Nighthawks

East Kilbride Pirates (U19)

No numbers or nine-yard marks. No limit lines. No Team area marked.

Henry Richardson #25

4th August 2024 v Chorley Buccaneers

Humber Warhawks

No nine-yard marks or three-yard marks.

Joel Pearson #405

28th July 2024 v Yorkshire Rams

London Blitz

100-yard grass field with ten-yard end zones marked faintly in white. Field surface was sandy in places but was level throughout and a considerable improvement on previous years. No limit lines, numbers, or nine-yard marks. Team areas too small and the coaching line and team area line on one side of the field were too close. Goals too wide and one was out of alignment until Game Management improvised a solution. Good size lockable changing room but with too few seats or coat hooks.

Tim Ockendon #481

4th August 2024 v Bristol Aztecs

London Blitz (U19)

Some main lines were not straight. Hash marks and short yard-line extensions were unevenly spaced, both with regards to distance from the sidelines and the space between them. Markings were also quite feint and hard to see with the sun out. No limit lines. Coaching boxes and team areas marked with cones. There were a few uneven patches on the field surface, although it was playable.

Peter Parsons #321

4th August 2024 v London Warriors

Manchester Titans (NWFL)

Freshly marked 80-yard field. The home team's jerseys were illegal due to non-contrasting numbers. Therefore the home team were penalised in accordance with Rule 1-4-5-c.

Steve Hall #512

3rd August 2024 v Teesside Steelers

Newcastle Shield Maidens (NWFL)

Cones used to mark one sideline and no centre line.

Kenneth Glover #71

27th July 2024 v Caledonia Chaos

Newcastle Vikings

There were permanent soccer markings on the field, however the home team had painted this out in dark green. Plaudits to Newcastle on doing this, while fairly common to do elsewhere, Newcastle are the first UK team that I have seen do this. No nine-yard marks or numbers. No limit lines were marked, but there was a barrier at the edge of the field area. The Coaching line was marked, but the line at 12ft was not. Team areas were marked between the 25-yard lines. The light in the officials' toilet was not working and there was no natural light, other facilities were available. The changing room was not lockable.

Ben Griffiths #228

4th August 2024 v Tamworth Phoenix

North East Giants (U19)

No three-yard lines.

Ali May #42

4th August 2024 v Manchester Titans

Nottingham Caesars (U19)

The pitch has been remarked in red although, the short yard-line extensions are half the length they should be and the coaches' boxes are still too close to the sideline. One change of chain crew at halftime.

Joel Pearson #405

4th August 2024 v Sheffield Giants

Tamworth Phoenix

No nine-yard marks or numbers. No team areas were marked. First-class game management and sideline crew, chains, and ball persons.

Brian Yates #29

11th August 2024 v East Kilbride Pirates

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A12 throws a forward pass intended for A89. During the pass, defensive end B88 is flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The pass to A89 is complete for a 10-yard gain to the A-30 where A88 is tackled.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: It is 4th and 10 at Midfield. Team A line up in a Scrimmage Kick Formation. The Ends are numbered 23 and 34. The Offensive Line is numbers (from left to right, 50, 62, 5, 71, 79), the Punter is wearing number 7 and the three personal procters/up-backs are number 47, 33 & 39.

Number 5 is the long snapper. Shortly before the snap A47 moves to a position under centre, pauses for a second and then receives the snap. He throws a forward pass to A23 at the B-30 where A23 catches the ball and is immediately tackled. There is 10:00 remaining in the second quarter.

Ruling: 4th and 15 at the A-45. The game clock will start on the Ready for Play and the Play Clock will be 25 seconds.

When A47 steps in under centre Team A are no longer in a Scrimmage Kick Formation, therefore the numbering exceptions no longer apply and they must have 5 players wearing 50 to 79 on the line if the ball is snapped while A47 is under centre (2-16-10-a, 7-1-4-a-3).

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: When in doubt is a blind-side block legal or illegal?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: Upon arrival at the venue it is noted that the hash marks are marked 70 feet 9 inches from the sideline not 60 feet. (I.e. in accordance with NFL field markings not IFAF field markings). It is not possible to correct the marking on game day.

The Visiting Team Coach requests that if the ball becomes dead in a side-zone, the ball is spotted where it would be if NCAA hash marks were present.

Answer: This request is denied, if the ball becomes, the ball shall be transferred to the nearest hash mark (2-23-1-h, 7-1-1-c & M5.8).
