DISQUALIFICATION AND MISCONDUCT REPORTS

The 2024 BAFA Regulations have now come into effect. One of the changes is that when an offence involves misconduct directed at one or more game officials, then the suspensions and fines will be doubled. This includes the case if a disqualification arises from two Unsportsmanlike Conduct fouls, and either or both fouls were directed at a game official. Therefore, when reporting a disqualification; the time, quarter, nature and calling officials of both Unsportsmanlike Conduct fouls must be included in the report. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: Inside the last minute of the first half. Team B are trailing. 1st & 10 at Team B's 20-yard line. A25 receives a handoff in the backfield and runs to Team B's 23-yard line where he throws a backwards pass to A9 who is running a reverse. The pass sails high which causes A9 to jump up at Team B's 27-yard line where he bats the ball forwards. The ball lands a few yards in front of A9 where B65 muffs the ball and it rolls across the sideline at Team B's 21-yard line. What is the next down, where will the ball next be snapped from? What Clock options do Team B have?

Ruling?

Last week

Play: 4th & 7 at Team A’s 45-yard line. A19 punts the ball. While the ball is in the air, B38 gives an invalid fair catch signal. B80 catches the kick at Team B’s 20-yard line and advances to Team B’s 27-yard line. Which Team will next put the ball in play? Where will the Ball be placed? What will the play clock be set to?

Ruling: Team B will next put the ball in play at the B-15 yard line. The play clock will be set to 25 seconds. B80’s advance is illegal due to the invalid signal by B38. This is a 5-yard penalty for Delay of Game enforced from Team B’s 20-yard line with Team B retaining possession. The play clock is set to 25 seconds as Team B are awarded a first down and will next snap the ball. (2-8-3, 2-8-1-c, 6-5-2, AR 6-5-2-I, 3-2-4-c-7)

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: 1st and 10 on the A40.  Quarterback A3 throws a legal forward pass to A88 on the B-45.  A88 rises to catch the ball and falls to the ground holding the ball.  On a 4 man crew, the only official with a view of the catch is the Linejudge.  As A88 comes to the ground the Linejudge can see that the player has possession of the ball until he hits the ground.  The ball then disappears from the Linejudge's view as A88 contacts the ground heavily.  A88 then gets up and is holding the ball. Ruling?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: Upon arrival at the game site, there are no goal posts available. Both Coaches agree to play the game. The game kicks off and the Visiting Team fall behind and are trailing 27-0 at the end of the first quarter. During the interval, the Visiting Team Head Coach informs the Referee that he no longer wishes to play the game without goal posts as he feels that his team is at an unfair disadvantage and wishes for the game to be abandoned.

Answer: As both Head Coaches have agreed to play the game (and the game has kicked off), the Visiting Team’s Head Coach’s decision to start is irrevocable and the game cannot be abandoned on these grounds. If the Visiting Team is no longer willing the continue the game the game cannot  they must forfeit the game.
