JOHN SLAVIN AWARD - BUCS SEASON 2023-24
Congratulations to the Southampton Stags who were this year’s winners of the John Slavin Award. This was judged on game day management and, overall, the scores showed a slight improvement on the last time this category was judged.
The award is named after John Slavin. John was a long-serving BAFRA official and sometime director of the Association who sadly died in October 2005. In his memory, BAFRA has dedicated an award to a team that shows commitment to improving the game experience for players and fans, as well as officials.

BAFRA ANNUAL CONVENTION – SAT 6TH AND SUN 7TH APRIL 2024
Break Out Sessions
For first-timers, and a gentle reminder to everyone else, I would advise you to get to these sessions promptly. Get to recognise your group and which rooms the sessions are taking place in as quickly as possible to avoid the embarrassment of turning up in the wrong room or turning up late (remember that if you are late the empty seat is always the one at the front of the room). We do try to help when you get a coffee/tea break between sessions, by giving you a reminder when your next session is due to begin. You don’t have to tip the presenters but they appreciate you giving them your full attention (you can always applaud at the end – it lets the next group wonder what you were doing).
Location
The Convention will be held at Yarnfield Park Training & Conference Centre, Yarnfield Lane, Yarnfield, Staffordshire, ST15 0NL. Yarnfield Park is a leading Training and Conference centre in the heart of the UK. I would recommend that you look over the facility on their website where you can find details of the location and directions: https://www.yarnfieldpark.com
Finally
If you have any questions or queries about the convention, please drop an email to convention@bafra.info and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

DISCIPLINARY CASES
NAME | # | TEAM | CODE | Q | OFFENCE | SUSPENDED | |
New this week | |||||||
Fabio Campos | 84 | Gloucestershire Gladiators | TUF | 4 | With 1:22 remaining in the second quarter, after scoring a Touchdown, #84 got to their feet and, whilst standing over an opponent on the ground, imitated the firing of a machine gun. With 5:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, after a play, #84 was witnessed commenting to an opponent whilst pointing towards the electronic scoreboard which was erected pitchside for the fixture. This was penalised for a second act of taunting. | Unknown |
GAME MANAGEMENT REPORTS
HOME TEAM | REPORT | NEXT HOME GAME |
New this week | ||
KCL Regents | The field did not meet the requirements by rule for a game to commence. Both teams agreed to play a scrimmage. With a score of 14-0, the away team withdrew from the scrimmage due to an allegation of a racist slur being used by a home team player. James Ford-Bannister #479 | Unknown |
Edinburgh Napier Knights | Well-marked 90-yard field with team areas marked to the 25-yard lines. The game was played in great spirits, in front of a full and enthusiastic crowd - a good advert for the game. The changing room for a female official doubled as a kit room - it was cold and untidy. She also had to share with the female players from the home team. Gordon Galloway #7 | Unknown |
Gloucester Gladiators | Changing rooms were lockable during the game. Visible scoreboard provided pitchside. Krister Halvorsen #77 | Unknown |
Northants Knights | Due to the venue, changing facilities are extremely limited. However, prior knowledge allowed us to arrive in uniform. Although a really well-marked field, the markings are for high school with wider hash marks and goals. Brian Yates #29 | Unknown |
Sandwell Steelers | Game played at the University of Nottingham. Official's changing is a series of 1/2-person rooms. 90-yard field with markings in red and faded. Other sports markings were located very close to the football markings including another red sideline for another sport, which is very close to the opposite press box sideline. Team areas were too close to the sidelines. Jed Brookes-Lewis #395 | UnknowUnknownn |
Staffordshire Stallions | No coaches area. Team area marked. Andrew Lovell #559 | Unknown |
PLAY OF THE WEEK: | |
New this week | Play: 4th & 7 at Team A’s 45-yard line. A19 punts the ball. While the ball is in the air, B38 gives an invalid fair catch signal. B80 catches the kick at Team B’s 20-yard line and advances to Team B’s 27-yard line. Which Team will next put the ball in play? Where will the Ball be placed? What will the play clock be set to?
|
Last week | Play: 4th and 1 at the B-40. QB A4 moves from shotgun for mation to under center and barks signals in an unsuccessful attempt to draw Team B offside. With 10 seconds remaining on the play clock, A4 backs away from the center and jogs toward the sideline being very demonstrative with his arms and waiving to the bench. As A4 approaches the sideline, the ball is snapped directly to back A30 just before the play clock expires and A30 runs to the B-38 where he is tackled in bounds.

MECHANICS: | |
New this week | Game Situation: Upon arrival at the game site, there are no goal posts available. Both Coaches agree to play the game. The game kicks off and the Visiting Team fall behind and are trailing 27-0 at the end of the first quarter. During the interval, the Visiting Team Head Coach informs the Referee that he no longer wishes to play the game without goal posts as he feels that his team is at an unfair disadvantage and wishes for the game to be abandoned.
|
Last week | Game Situation: Team A, 4th and 30 at Midfield. Team A line up with two receivers on either side of the formation. Team B line up with 3 defensive linemen, all other defensive players are lined up near the line to gain. On a 7 man crew which official will key on the widest player on the press-box side of the formation at the snap? Answer: No Official should. The immediate action after the snap is phase A of pass play coverage as there is no likelihood of physical contact between the receiver and a defender, there is no need to key on the widest player in the formation. (M16.2.1) Once it is clear as to which area each receiver is running the officials should be in phase B of plass play coverage during which they cover receivers in their zone. (M16.2.2). |
