BAFRA  ANNUAL CONVENTION – SAT 6TH  AND SUN 7TH  APRIL 2024

Update

Congratulations to everyone who has now signed up to attend the convention. We have now passed final payment date, so everyone should be paid up, and ready. As we still have a couple of weeks to go I will continue to publish Yarnfield’s details, and add a few reminders regarding what to expect.

Sat 6th

Just a reminder that our last activity before break up will be our AGM.  Then you can relax with our annual Awards Dinner and quiz, so you will need to keep your brains sharp, and remember the Scottish team cheers all the answers (even if they don’t get them all correct).

Location

The Convention will be held at Yarnfield Park Training & Conference Centre, Yarnfield Lane, Yarnfield, Staffordshire, ST15 0NL.  Yarnfield Park is a leading Training and Conference centre in the heart of the UK.  I would recommend that you look over the facility on their website where you can find details of the location and directions: https://www.yarnfieldpark.com

Finally

If you have any questions or queries around the convention, please drop an email to convention@bafra.info  and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

Brighton Panthers

Field was dark green, markings were dark blue, and there was a lot of black rubber crumb - so it was difficult to see the lines on the field. Goal posts are strapped to the fence at the end of each end of the field and not in the plane of the end line. Not enough changing room space for all the officials (but there were eight.)

Dean Wright #553

Unknown

Exeter Demons

The endzones were less than seven yards deep and so the goal line was moved to the previous five-yard line and the game was played on an 80-yard field.

Keith Wickham #423

Unknown

Northumbria Mustangs

Well-marked 90-yard field marked in red, with other sports markings that were utilised with cones to mark team areas.

Ali May #42

Unknown

Nottingham Gold

Official's changing is a series of 1/2-person rooms, which aren't lockable but the Nottingham HC arranged for the staff room to be used for pre-game and for locking kit away in. 90-yard field with markings in red and faded. Other sports markings were located very close to the football markings including another red sideline for another sport, which is very close to the opposite press box sideline. Team areas were too close to the sidelines.

James Ford-Bannister #479

Unknown

NTU Renegades

Field was marked with the short yard-line extensions continuing into the end zone. Due to the weather the field markings particularly in the middle of the field deteriorated significantly as the game progressed. No team area markings.

Andrew Murrell #608

Unknown

UCLan Rams

Well-marked 100-yard artificial field. There were other sports markings in close proximity to the endzones. Team areas were missing but marked out using cones.

David Hewitt #607

Unknown

UWE Bullets

Two small changing rooms, neither really big enough for a crew of four, so the crew used both in shifts. Team areas were marked to the 25-yard lines.

Peter Parsons #321

Unknown

Swansea Titans

Game was played at Cardiff University. 90-yard field with seven-yard endzones. Field markings are in yellow and very faint in places. The goal posts are set back more than five yards behind each end line - due to this distance, padding is not required (an exception to rule [1-2-5-e]).

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: 4th and 1 at the B-40. QB A4 moves from shotgun for mation to under center and barks signals in an unsuccessful attempt to draw Team B offside. With 10 seconds remaining on the play clock, A4 backs away from the center and jogs toward the sideline being very

demonstrative with his arms and waiving to the bench. As A4 approaches the sideline, the ball is snapped directly to back A30 just before the play clock expires and A30 runs to the B-38 where he is tackled in bounds.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: Late in the game, Team A are trailing by 4 points and they attempt an onside kick. The ball is kicked into the ground and rolls forward 9 yards to the A-44. A56 blocks B90 above the waist, from the front at the A-46 before the untouched ball is fallen on and recovered by A71 at the A-44 yard line.

Ruling: B’s ball 1st and 10 at the B-39 yard line.

While Team A end the down in possession (2-4-1-b-1), they do not end the down in legal possession (2-4-1-c). Therefore ball belongs to Team B at the spot of A71’s recovery (2-4-2 & 6-1-6-a). As the ball belongs to Team B the penalty can be enforced from that spot (6-1-8).

The spot where A71 recovers the ball is both the spot of the an illegal touching violation and the dead ball spot. If the penalty for the foul by A56 is accepted the illegal touching is dismissed, however the penalty can still be enforced from the spot where the ball belongs to Team B.

The alternative enforcement in this scenario is that the five yard penalty can be enforced from the previous spot and the Free-Kick down repeated, however given the game situation Team B will not want this option, this penalty enforcement should be considered obvious.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: Team A, 4th and 30 at Midfield. Team

A line up with two receivers on either side of the formation. Team B line up with 3 defensive linemen, all other defensive players are lined up near the line to gain. On a 7 man crew which official will key on the widest player on the press-box side of the formation at the snap?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: 3rd and 10, after a timeout and after the ball has been blown ready for play, Team A line up ready to snap the ball while the team B coach – unaware that the timeout is ending – continues to talk to his players at the sidelines.  How should officials react to this situation?

Answer: M-3-4-1-c.  If no players from Team B are ready to play when Team A is set to snap the ball following a timeout, penalise Team B for delay of game. Do not give Team A a free play. The officials on the sideline are responsible for ensuring that the captain or coach of the team knows that the timeout is about to end.
