CHAIN CREWS FOR NFL INTERNATIONAL SERIES, LONDON 2022

Expressions of Interest to be part of the Chain Crew for the NFL International Series are now invited from all eligible members.

Details of the NFL's requirements are still being finalised, however, should you wish to be considered, please apply via email to operations@bafra.info.

Please clearly state for which games you will be available. If you have worked at an International Series game in the past, please detail what role and what year.

I would encourage all members who are eligible to consider applying. However, please be aware that we are always heavily oversubscribed and the NFL insist on some continuity of experience.

We want to give as many dedicated officials an opportunity to work at these major events and unlike some other roles, where longevity is essential, here it is also about "taking regard of the member's commitment to officiating and contribution to BAFRA". If you require further information about any aspect of this important role please contact me directly for an informal discussion.

It should also be noted that each official will receive a game fee for performing this duty but travel expenses are not paid.

On submission of your expression of interest, you will receive an acknowledgement.  If you do not receive a reply within 72 hours then contact me to ensure your application has been received.

The closing date for applications is Friday 26th August.

New this week

Gateshead Senators (U19)

Goal Posts not vertically straight. 90-yard field. Field Markings were prepared the day before and had been partially washed away due to heavy rain during the night, so some lines were faint and difficult to see. With 8:56 remaining in the third Quarter, Gateshead #13 suffered a suspected neck/spine injury. The game was delayed for one hour whilst an ambulance was called, and the player taken to A&E. Robin Boyd #191

Highland Stags

Apart from there being no field numbers this was a well marked out field - there were even chain clip reference marks.

Ian Sneddon #427

Leicester Falcons

Field marked in black with lines somewhat faded. No nine-yard marks or team areas.

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: Team A lead 14-13 and there is 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter with the game clock stopped. Both teams have two timeouts remaining. It is 2 & 10 at the A-30 yard line. Running back A34 gains 2 yards on a running play and is tackled at the A-32 yard line.. During the play, Tackle A78 holds at the A-28 yard line.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: Late in the first half Team A is out of timeouts. A pass play on third down ends inbounds at the B-25 short of the line to gain with the game clock showing 0:30. Facing fourth down and three, Team A gives no indication as to its next play until the game clock reads 0:10. They then rush their field goal unit onto the field, and Team B then hurries to respond.

Ruling: The umpire moves to the ball to prevent the snap until Team B has had a reasonable opportunity to get its field-goal defence unit onto the field. The umpire will step away when thet judge that the defence has had enough time. If the game clock reads 0:00 before the ball is snapped the half is over. (3-5-2, AR 3-5-2-VIII)

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: During a timeout, the Head Coach from the Head Linesman's sideline calls his team over and stands on the field 5 yards from sideline talking to them in a huddle.  How should the Head Linesman react to the Head Coach being on the field?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: The game is played at a venue with only one stand at the side of the field. The game is not being broadcast. The home team select to use the sideline opposite this stand. While the Head Linesman is briefing the chain crew. The Home Team Head Coach states “we want the chains run on the other side of the field so they don’t get in our way”.

Answer: The request is denied. The chains must be run on the side opposite the press box (1-2-7). If there is not a formal press box, the location of the press box is determined by the location of the majority of spectators not by which side of the field the home team chooses to use (M8.2.2).

Note - if the game was being broadcast, the main TV camera may be located opposite the stand (in order to have the stand in the background of shot), therefore it would be correct to run the chains on the side of the stand in this case.
