The remarks continued after this drawing a second UC penalty.

Andrew Murrell #608

Outstanding items from previous weeks

Berkshire Renegades

Well-marked 100-yard field. Team areas marked to the ten-yard lines, but this was rectified with cones prior to kick off. Game delayed slightly due to late arrival of medical cover. At half-time, the remaining quarters were shorted to 0 minutes at agreement of both Head Coaches.

Kieran Smith #102

3rd July 2022 v East Kent Mavericks

Chester Romans

90 yard field marked in blue. Goal posts comprising extensions to existing soccer goal posts with correct width between uprights.

Perry Wayman #504

19th June 2022 v Halton Spartans

Cornwall Monarchs

80 Yard field, marked with blue lines with 11 yard end zones. Goalposts were 1-2 yards beyond end line and some yard lines were inconsistent distance from others - at this new (for American football) venue. Changing rooms were in nearby gym/sports hall and could not be locked so bags and valuables were put in car.

Francis Bevan #474

19th June 2022 v Somerset Wyverns

DC Presidents

All field markings were very faint, the home team head coach was advised it would need remarking prior to the next home game. There were no three-yard marks and the crossbar of the posts sit approximately two-yards behind each end zone.

Lee Taylor #183

17th July 2022 v Gateshead Senators

East Kent Mavericks

Good quality 90-yard artificial field with various colour markings for different sports. The home team had a hard time finding chain crew and ball persons, so the kickoff was delayed.

Viktor Janvari #63

26th June 2022 v South East Legion

Edinburgh Napier Knight (U19)

Team areas marked to 25 instead of the 20-yard line.

Kenneth Glover #71

2nd July 2022 v Gateshead Senators

Gateshead Senators

90-yard field with ten-yard end zones. The goal posts were moveable rugby goalposts and, due to the uneven surface at one end, leant to the side. This was not an issue for either of the teams, so the games were played in both directions. No nine-yard markings or numbers. There was only three feet of space for the officials before the coaches line but no coaches box marked. Team areas were marked to the 25-yard lines.

Robin Boyd #191

3rd July 2022 v DC Presidents

Inverclyde Goliaths

Team areas were marked to the 25-yard lines but were adjusted to the correct lines with cones.

Ian Sneddon #427

19th June 2022 v Glasgow Tigers

Leicester Falcons

Markings faint but visible. No coaches boxes or team areas marked. No numbers or nine-yard marks. Used away team’s footballs. One of the chain crew had to be advised to put away their mobile phone at the request of the away team’s head coach due to the possibility of data being transferred across to the home team e.g. plays, formations.

Brian Yates #29

26th June 2022 v Birmingham Bulls

Leigh Miners

Well marked 80-yard field with no limit lines present. Spacious changing room that was secured during the game. Hospitality by the home club was excellent - with a cup of tea provided on arrival and the officials were made aware there would be food provided after the game (as we all had to leave immediately post game - the kind offer was not taken up).

Krister Halvorsen #77

19th June 2022 v Staffordshire Surge

Lincolnshire Bombers

Very well marked out 90yd field, only issue was a non lockable changing room.

Dan Chandler #250

19th June 2022 v Scunthorpe Alphas

London Blitz

There were a lot of holes on the field from the shot put but these were filled before kick off. The surface was uneven in places.

Keith Wickham #423

19th June 2022 v Solent Thrashers

London Hornets

Team areas marked with cords and poles. Officials room, although large, was dirty and had no separate showers. During the second half, the ball boy on the visiting teams side got into a conversation with the away teams coaching staff and decided his day was over. He was replaced with a volunteer from the away team.

Brian Yates #29

26th June 2022 v Cambridgeshire Cats

London Olympians

Well marked 90-yard field with 10-yard end zones, marked in blue with other sport markings in white and yellow. Marks at 9-yards and no team area markings, although rugby lines approximated for coaching lines and the ends of the team areas were marked with cones. KO delayed by 15 minutes with the consent of both coaches due to players and officials being caught up in the backlog resulting from a serious RTA. One ball person changed at half time.

Tim Ockendon #481

19th June 2022 v London Warriors

Nuneaton Jaguars (U16)

The final game of the day was delayed waiting for the arrival of an ambulance to treat an injured player. As the corresponding game on pitch 2 had ended and with adequate medical cover, the game from pitch 1 resumed on pitch 2 after a 15 minute delay.

Brian Yates #29

Unknown

Ouse Valley Eagles

Three-yard marks marked at two-yards.

Joseph Foxon #473

19th June 2022 v Colchester Gladiators

90-yard field with markings in blue. Lots of white lines present for youth athletics.

Viktor Janvari #63

26th June 2022 v Oxford Saints

Sandwell Steelers

Field marked in black with some lines in yellow. Grass was & field surface was a little uneven. No numbers, 9 yard marks or limit lines.

Jed Brookes-Lewis #395

26th June 2022 v Sheffield Giants

Staffordshire Surge

Several holes in field needed to be filled prior to game.

Andrew Lovell #559

3rd July 2022 v Leigh Miners

Solent Seahawks (U19)

Field marked mostly in yellow apart from the 10 yard lines at both ends, which were mostly in blue, and yellow near the sidelines, and the midfield line, which was white. Team areas marked to the 25 yard lines. Both goal posts overhung the end zone in bounds. The officials changing room is small for a crew of 5. At the end of half time, with the agreement of both head coaches and the Referee, the 3rd and 4th quarters were shortened to zero minutes under Rule 3-2-2-a.

Peter Parsons #321

24th July 2022 v South East Legion

Solent Thrashers

Field marked mostly in yellow apart from the 10 yard lines at both ends, which were mostly in blue, and yellow near the sidelines, and the midfield line, which was white. Team areas marked to the 25 yard lines. Both goal posts overhung the end zone in bounds. The officials changing room is small for a crew of 5.

Peter Parsons #321

26th June 2022 v Kent Exiles

South East Legion (U19)

100-yard field with only one goalpost at one end of the field. Game played with one-goal mechanics.

Viktor Janvari #63

3rd July 2022 v Wembley Stallions

South East Squadron

Only one set of goal posts so one-goal mechanics were used. Team areas were not marked out correctly and cones were used instead. Changing facilities are fairly basic with no shower facility, though they were, at least, spacious. Balls and officials assistants provided very late.

Dean Wright #553

19th June 2022 v East Essex Sabres

South Wales Warriors

Crew got changed in the stadium's medical suite, which wasn't locked and has no private toilet or shower. 90-yard field with 8-yard endzones. The lines have been recently remarked, but were noticeably faint in one corner - it appears as though the grass was cut after the lines were marked. This did not cause any issues on the day.

Amir Brooks #593

19th June 2022 v Portsmouth Dreadnoughts

Sussex Thunder

90-yard field in blue with other markings in white, yellow, and red. No nine-yard marks or numbers. End lines are too close to the fence and therefore, as usual at this venue, the Soccer goal line was used as the end line. Team areas marked with cones. Short yard line extensions at the hash marks, between each 15-yard line and goal line, are so faded that they are almost impossible to see in direct sunlight. Spotting was assisted by the hash mark pylons but the field must be remarked to be playable in future. Supplied balls had to be inflated to correct pressure. Chain broke twice.

James Ford-Bannister #479

19th June 2022 v London Hornets

Torbay Trojans

90-yard field. Only one officials’ changing room was available, which was suitable for three officials maximum. However, game management did provide a suitable room to have the pregame conference with refreshments.

Euan Paterson #165

24th July 2022 v Somerset Wyverns

Yorkshire Academy Assassins (U19)

The west endzone is bordered by a pole vault area, the 'hole' for the pole was uncovered and represented a possible trip hazard for a player running out of the end zone. The area was marked with barriers.

Robin Boyd # 191

19th June 2022 v Tamworth Phoenix

Yorkshire Rams

The west endzone is bordered by a pole vault area, the 'hole' for the pole was uncovered and represented a possible trip hazard for a player running out of the end zone. The area was marked with barriers.

Robin Boyd # 191

19th June 2022 v Lancashire Wolverines

END ZONE

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A 1st and 10 and the B-25. Running Back A32 received the hand-off and carries the ball across B’s Goal Line. During A32’s run B99 clips A88 at the B-10.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: Team A free kick at the A-35. During the free kick, B21 signals for a fair catch at the B-10 while moving backwards. He muffs the kick into the air at the B-9 and completes the catch (before it hits the ground) at the B-7

Ruling: B – 1st  @ 10 @ B-10 / Snap. B21 signals for a valid fair catch, however, he muffs the ball and does not complete the process of the catch until he is at the B-7. By rule (6-5-1-b and AR 6-5-1-III), if a Team B player makes a valid fair catch signal and muffs the kick, and he or another Team B player, subsequently catches the kick the ball is placed where B21 first touched the kick. However, in discussion with Steve Shaw because B21 is the only player to touch the kick prior to it hitting the ground and subsequently completes the catch, he will be given the benefit as if he had completed the catch initially and the ball will be placed at the B-10. The clock will start on the snap.

Play of the Week Correction

Newsflash 20/22 gave the incorrect answer to play of the week inNewsflash 19/22. AR 7-2-4:III has changed to bring IFAF in line with NCAA rules. The correct ruling is as follows:

Play: Fourth and three at the B-7, A20 fumbles the ball at the B-5 and the bouncing ball is batted towards B’s end line at the B-3 by B40. The ball is recovered in the end zone by A23.

Ruling: Safety, score 2 points for Team A.(AR7-2-4-III) (See Approved Ruling 8-5-1:XI)

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: When should the Referee give a preliminary signal following a penalty? What should the other officials be doing while the Referee is giving a preliminary signal?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: All officials carry a bean bag as part of their on-field equipment.  Which officials should carry at least 2 bean bags?

Answer: All officials should carry at least two bean bags to use to mark spots other than sots of fouls (MM 21.1.1)
