END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: 4th & 3 at the B-43 yard line. There are 33 seconds remaining in the game, Team B have one timeout remaining. The game is being played with a Video Judge. Team A attempts a forward pass which is ruled complete at the B-39 yard line, with the ball carrier being tackled inbounds. The Team B Head Coach takes a timeout and requests that the play be reviewed as he believes the pass was incomplete.

After review the Video Judge determines that the pass was not caught and should have been ruled incomplete, however he observes that Team B had 12 players on the field during the down. Ruling?

Ruling?

Last week

Play: Team A, 4th & 11 at the B-35 with the ball at position 5. QB A4 scrambles toward the press box side of the field. B17 grabs and restricts A88 in the middle of the field at the B-24 just as A4 releases the pass from the B-41. B56 leaps up at the B-35 and intercepts the pass and lands at the B-35 where he is tackled by A4 at the B-41. The Back Judge has a flag down on this play.

Ruling: Team A, 4th & 1 at B-25, ball is spotted at position 5. B24 commits a foul for defensive holding when he grabs and restricts A88 (9-3-4-d), however, it does not carry an automatic first down for Team A as the pass did not cross the neutral zone (9-3-5) nor is it a foul for DPI (7-3-8) for the same reason as the ball did not cross the neutral zone. The foul will be enforced 10 yards from the previous spot.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: How many different lateral positions should the ball be spotted at? How are they denoted?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: 4th and 7 from Team A’s 15-yard line near the end of the 1st quarter. Team A line up to punt facing a very strong headwind with punter A8 standing on the Team A goal line. The long snap is wayward and the ball rolls into the end zone where it stops. B55 is moving to recover the ball when A8 holds B55 in the end zone. B98 muffs the ball causing it to roll across the end line. Time expires in the 1st quarter during the down. A8 is guilty of holding. As the hold occurred in the end zone, should the officials regard enforcement of the penalty as 'obvious'?

Answer: Though it is true that accepting or declining the penalty will, in both cases result in a safety, the decision will also decide which direction Team A would free kick afterwards.  If the penalty is accepted the half does not end, whereas if it's declined the half would end and the teams would change sides (3-2-3-a-1).  Since there is a strong wind, Team B may want Team A to kick into the wind or kick with the wind.  It is a choice that should be left to Team B, not the officials.  The penalty enforcement is therefore not obvious.
