NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

ARU ran out of fit players, so coaches agreed to end the game at the half time interval with QMBL Vipers leading 34-0.

Larry Rigby #269

Bath Killer Bees

Kickoff delayed by 15 minutes due to the late arrival of the visiting team.

Amir Brooks #593

Birmingham Lions

The field is marked with black lines which make it difficult to see under floodlights.

Brian Yates #29

22nd January 2022 v UEA Pirates

Bournemouth Bobcats

100-yard field. With 8:05 remaining in the third quarter, a serious injury for a Bournemouth player caused the game to stop for an hour and 15 mins. With agreement by both head coaches and referee the game proceeded. Chain crew changed at half time.

Richard Madge #485

23rd January 2022 v Gloucestershire Gladiators

Brunel Burners

Well marked 90-yard field in blue, with other sport markings in white. No limit lines, numbers, or nine-yard marks, and inbounds lines at NFL depth. Changing room small for a crew of five and not lockable.

Tim Ockendon #481

Glasgow University Tigers

With just over eight minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Sunderland coach withdrew his team because his players were slipping on the field surface.

Ian Sneddon #427

23rd January 2022 v Teesside Cougars

Gloucester Gladiators

80-yard field marked with NFL-width hash marks. Team areas not marked to COVID regulations.

Kieran Smith #102

Unknown

Hertfordshire Hurricanes

90-yard field. Markings are in yellow and are faded alongside other sports markings. Team Areas were not marked to the 10-yard line. On two occasions the game was stopped and the down replayed due to the ball hitting a dividing wire that runs above the field. The chain crew was changed in the second half, with the more experienced ball person taking on the role of down box operator.

Richard Moger #472

23rd January 2022 v RHUL Bears

Leicester Longhorns

NFL-width hash marks. No team areas or nine-yard marks. Home team wearing three different jersey designs.

Joel Pearson #405

23rd January 2022 v Warwick Wolves

LJMU Fury

On arrival it was noted that the field markings were very faint, the venue offered to remark the pitch but did not actually have enough paint to do this and what they had was gloopy. The posts at one end of the field were about a yard behind the end line. There were markings for other sports and some hash marks from the previous pitch markings were almost as visible as the current ones.

Lee Taylor #183

23rd January 2022 v Sheffield Hallam Warriors

NTU Renegades

To allow for a spectator viewing facility, one end of the home team coaching and team areas were shortened and marked with cones. Otherwise, a really well marked field.

Brian Yates #29

12th December 2021 v Coventry Jets

Portsmouth Destroyers

90-yard grass field, marked in blue. No three-yard marks, nine-yard marks, or numbers. Short yard line extensions considerably exceed 24"s. Markings are starting to fade in the middle of the field. No team or coaches areas marked so approximated with other field markings and cones. Home sideline is in close proximity to a soccer field so it limits available space. Single changing room was provided, so the female official used a lockable toilet to change. Away team played in a mixture of green uniforms that did not match, including tape marked bibs. One stake was already minorly damaged prior to the game but was easily repaired. One ball person was changed at half time.

James Ford-Bannister #479

23rd January 2022 v Sussex Saxons

Reading Knights

Kickoff delayed by ten minutes due to late arrival of the medic.

Euan Paterson #165

30th January 2022 v Bristol Barracuda

Sheffield Hallam Warriors

80-yard field. No three-yard, nine-yard marks, or numbers. No coaching boxes or players’ areas but used other sports lines. Two sets of midfield hash marks were present, unfortunately one set was NFL-width and the other was High School-width. Field markings were faint, making it very difficult to see hash markings under the flood lights. COVID markings marked using cones.

Robin Boyd #191

12th December 2021 v Manchester Tyrants

York Centurions

Game did not go ahead due to the ground staff saying the pitch was waterlogged. This was emailed to the Referee after the crew had set off, this was not seen until the Referee had arrived at the venue and the rest of the crew were in transit.

Chris Jarvis #10

13th February 2022 v Edinburgh Predators

Outstanding items from previous weeks

City Wolfpack

90-yard field. NFL-width hash marks. Short yard line extensions were marked in metres but main lines in yards. End zones were only seven yards deep.

Lee Wood #517

30th January 2022 v UEL Phoenix

Derby Braves

With one minute left in the third quarter, two inches of snow obscured the lines despite repeated sweeping. The surface was also slippery so the game was abandoned on medical advice.

Andrew Lovell #559

30th January 2022 v Sheffield Hallam Warriors

Edinburgh Predators

Game was called off by the home team at 11:18 on the morning of the game.

Henry Richardson #25

Edinburgh Napier Knights

Team areas marked out to pre-COVID covid standards, adjustments were made to meet current requirements.

Kenneth Glover #71

12th December 2021 v Aberdeen Bulls

Essex Blades

One change of ball person. No numbers or nine-yard markings.

Lee Wood #517

30th January 2022 v Imperial Immortals

Exeter Demons

Faint and narrow field markings in black, this made inbounds short yard line extensions difficult to see. Seven-yard end zones, but otherwise a nice artificial field on main campus.

Francis Bevan #474

30th January 2022 v Southampton Stags

Imperial Immortals

Well marked 90-yard field in white. No numbers, nine-yard marks, team area markings or limit lines and inbounds lines marked at incorrect depth (36 feet).

Tim Ockendon #481

6th February 2021 v Essex Blades

KCL Regents

Well marked 90-yard field with eight-yard end zones, in blue with other sport markings in yellow, white & red. No numbers but rugby markings approximated for nine-yard marks. Team area markings at pre-COVID distances. One stake had been completely broken and repaired by lashing another pole to it. Four members of the chain crew were replaced prior to the third quarter and a further three were replaced prior to the fourth quarter. Changing room was small for a crew of five and not lockable.

Tim Ockendon #481

23rd January 2022 v Canterbury Phoenix

Keele Crusaders

With 7:00 remaining in second quarter, the game was suspended for 15 minutes to deal with an injured Chester #62. After the subsequent play, with 6:20 left in second quarter, the game was abandoned following a neck injury to Chester #95. #95 was lying on the field of play and couldn’t be moved until an ambulance arrived, which could be up to five hours. Chester had also run out of players.

Andrew Lovell #559

12th December 2021 v Lincoln Colonials

Leeds Beckett Carnegie

80-yard field. No three-yard marks, nine-yard marks, or numbers. The midfield hash marks were marked at NFL width. No coaching boxes were marked but other sports markings were used to solve some of the issues. All three game balls were underinflated and required pumping up prior to the game.

David Hewitt #607

30th January 2022 v Nottingham

Leeds Gryphons

At approximately 10.00 the game was officially called off by Leeds Gryphons due to an unplayable pitch.

David Hewitt #607

12th Dec 2021 v Nottingham Gold

Newcastle Raiders

Team areas on both sidelines not marked to the ten-yard line as per COVID regulations, this was resolved before kick off.

Gordon Galloway #7

30th January 2022 v Hull Sharks

QMBL Vipers

Well marked 90-yard field in blue. No numbers, nine-yard marks, or limit lines and team areas marked with cones. Dog excrement on the field was removed by Game Management prior to kickoff. Changing room had no private shower or toilet but was otherwise well appointed and lockable. One ball person was provided by the visiting team.

Tim Ockendon #481

12th December 2021 v Essex Blades

RHUL Bears

There was no designated area for a mixed crew. In the end we completed the pre-game in the men's changing room without problems.

Keith Wickham #423

12th December 2021 v Portsmouth Destroyers

SGS Pride

No problems with field or markings - two changing rooms were supplied for crew - for which refundable deposits had to be paid to get keys. Goal posts for other sports needed to be moved back from the field perimeter in order for the field area to be deemed safe.

Francis Bevan #474

23rd January 2022 v Exeter Demons

Southampton Stags

Goals are located on the fence behind the end line.

Roger Brown #469

12th December 2021 v Bristol Barracuda

Stirling Clansmen

Field markings were faded, and only eight pylons were provided, so markers were added behind the goals to assist with spotting the ball.

Ian Sneddon #427

23rd January 2022 v Leeds Gryphons

Surrey Stingers

On arrival at the ground we were told by the staff there that the pitch was not narked and in any event the groundsman had declared it as waterlogged.

Keith Wickham #423

6th February 2022 v Sussex Saxons

Swansea Titans

The field was generally well marked out, however, the sideline and inbounds short yard-line extensions were too small - barely a couple of inches long instead of the required 2'. Two of the chain crew were replaced at half time due to them being very slow and disinterested. Thankfully their replacements were noticeably better.

Amir Brooks #593

12th December 2021 v Birmingham Lions

UCLan Rams

100-yard field with no numbers, nine-yard marks, or team areas marked out. Kickoff was delayed by 15 mins due to previous use of the venue. Both teams warmed up on alternative fields but the away side were slow to migrate to the main field and did not have a roster for the officials upon arrival.

Andrew Swift #403

23rd January 2022 v Edge Hill Vikings

UWE Bullets

Two soccer referee changing rooms were provided, which means having a good pregame is challenging.

Keith Wickham #423

23rd January 2022 v Cardiff Cobras

UWE Pellets

One ball person was changed at half time.

Amir Brooks #593

6th February 2022 v Bath Spa Bulldogs

Warwick Wolves

Kickoff delayed until 13:30 due to medical cover arriving late. Changing rooms were non-lockable.

Krister Halvorsen #77

11th December 2021 v Loughborough Students

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: 3rd & 10 at Team A's 4-yard line. A1 hands the ball to A25 in the backfield. A25 carries the ball to Team A's 2-yard line and fumbles the ball which is recovered by B13 at Team A's 6-yard line. B13 then fumbles the ball at Team A's 3-yard line and the ball rolls into Team A's end zone. As the ball is rolling in the end zone, B13 bats it backwards and it crosses the sideline at Team A's 5-yard line.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: 2nd & 8 at Team’s B 40-yard line. 1:56 remains in the second quarter. A66 snaps the ball high to quarterback A10 who has to jump to control the snap. Whilst still airborne at Team B’s 45-yard line, A10 pitches the ball forwards to A88 who has run across the front of A10. A88 runs wide to the right and runs out of bounds at Team B’s 30-yard line. During A88’s run, B24 blocks A73 below the waist 6 yards beyond the neutral zone.

What is the next down and distance? What is the game clock status?

Ruling: It will be 2nd Down and 8 at the B40 yard line. The game clock is stopped and will start on the snap. The pitch by A10 is an illegal forward bat. This is because he never gains possession of the ball due to being airborne and the snap is a backwards pass. B24’s block is illegal as it is beyond 5 yards from the Neutral zone. The penalties offset. The run ended out of bounds so the game clock will start on the snap inside 2 minutes of the half. (2-19-2, 2-4-1-a, 2-11-3, 9-4-2, 9-1-6-b-1, 10-1-4, 3-3-2-d-2)

Play of the Week for Newsflash 41/21

Last week’s Newsflash (42/21) inadvertently omitted the answer to the Play of the Week from Newsflash issue 41/21 the answer is below:

Play: Team A have 1st and 10 at Midfield. Defensive End B98 is offside at the snap. Running back A34 carries the ball to the B-44 yard line. Immediately after the play B72 shoves an opponent in an act that is clearly not part of the game action.

Ruling: B98’s penalty for offside is declined (7-1-5-b-1), and the Unsportsmanlike Conduct Foul by B72 is enforced from the end of A34’s run (9-2-1-a-1-j). It will be 1st and 10 for Team A at the A-29 yard line. Enforcement of these penalties is obvious (M19.4) and there is no need to seek a decision from the Team A Head Coach.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: The game is played at a venue with only one stand at the side of the field. The game is not being broadcast. The home team select to use the sideline opposite this stand. While the Head Linesman is briefing the chain crew. The Home Team Head Coach states “we want the chains run on the other side of the field so they don’t get in our way”.

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: It’s 4th down, Team A line up to punt. The snap is high and goes over the punters head. On an 8 man crew, how should the Referee and Centre judge react?

Answer: The official nearest to the ball should continue to watch the ball and players trying to recover it. The other official should watch the kicker and players threatening him (M9.8.d.b.ii)
