PLAY OF THE WEEK: | |
New this week | Play: 2nd & 8 at the B-15 yard line. With under a minute remaining in the 2nd quarter the clock is running. A77 commits a False Start, charging into B61. B61 slugs A77 in response. The clock is stopped with 7 seconds left in the period and neither team has any timeouts remaining.
Last week | Play: 1st and 10 from Team B’s 15-yard line. There is less than 1 minute remaining in the fourth quarter and Team A are trailing by 4 points with no timeouts remaining. Quarterback A1 is in shotgun formation and the clock is running. A53 snaps the ball high. A1 leaps into the air, grasps the ball and, while still airborne, throws the ball forwards towards the ground to stop the clock. The ball hits A53 in the back, then bounces on the ground and into the hands of B56 who is kneeling on the ground at Team B’s 17-yard line.
MECHANICS: | |
New this week | Game Situation: Ball relay. On a 4 man crew the wing official will almost always be covering a dead ball spot near the sidelines. How should the Referee and Umpire work together to ensure that a ball is brought quickly into the new inbounds spot.
Last week | Game Situation: A34 is leaving the field as part of a substitution. The player is 6 yards from his sideline when he removes his helmet, he then walks slowly into his team area. Ruling? Answer: M3.5.5.d Players who unthinkingly remove their helmets on the field of play should not be penalised unless they are (i) directing anger or criticism at an opponent or an official; or (ii) celebrating. A player removing their helmet in the vicinity of the sideline just prior to entering the team area should be ignored. |
