Issue: 37/15

15th October 2015

We are now well into the renewal period and thank you to all who have returned their forms. Just a reminder that membership renewals should be made as soon as possible with those being made before 1st November being at a lower rate. Members will be pleased to note that yet again this year there is no rise in membership fees. However, if you anticipate any difficulty in paying, you should contact Charles Young, Director of Finance at and arrange a payment plan with him. This will, of course, be in strict confidence. Accompanying the renewal notice, the Directors are again conducting a survey of the membership. It is requested that you return your survey with your renewal.

I have now processed the automatic renewals and they are included in the list below. I have to date (midday on 14th October) received 80 renewals/new memberships for 2016 as follows:

Finally, in the unlikely event that you are not planning to renew your membership, it would be helpful if you would let me know (if possible with your reason(s) for not renewing).

This will be the first really busy weekend of the college season. Currently there are 32 games scheduled to be played over the weekend 7th / 8th November. We are asking for every active official to make themselves available to work a game.

If were showing unavailable on Arbiter but can now assist please let us know immediately so we can include you in the scheduling of these games.

Your assistance is required and appreciated.

Ricard Vernon

Officials have been assigned to games on this date. Unfortunately some officials who were showing as available have declined their assignments.

As a result we require extra officials to work games in the Midlands, North West and North East. Contact if you can assist.

The 2015 Opal Series (Adult Women's Flag) will be starting on Saturday 24th October in Leeds & Northampton, with tournaments following at fortnightly intervals (7th & 21st November) until the finals on Saturday 5th December.

Some of the venues are yet to be finalised, so can you let know ASAP if you would be interested in working any of these tournaments (venues permitting) and if you would be available to work either of the tournaments on the 24th.

Play: A's ball, 4th and 2, on A's 12. Punter A4, unable to get the kick off, runs wide and fumbles while in A's end zone. A63 catches or recovers the ball on A's 4 and advances to A's 16. Ruling?

Last week

Play: Team A scores a touchdown to make the score A35-B37. Eight seconds remain in the fourth quarter. On the 2 point try, QB A17 is hit on Team B's 9 yard line as his arm comes forward attempting to make a forward pass. A17 catches this own pass at the Team B 7 yard line and immediately throws a completed forward pass from that location to A88 who is in Team B's end zone. Ruling?

Ruling: A17's second forward pass is an illegal forward pass (7-3-2-d). Since the penalty carries a loss of down in addition to the 5-yard penalty, the try is not replayed (8-3-2-d-4). Team A must now kick off as normal. The score remains A35-B37. The clock starts if and when the ball is legally touched after the kickoff.

Last week

Play: Team A attempt a field goal from the B15. Which official has responsibility for covering the crossbar on the goals posts? It is a 5 man crew.
Answer: The linejudge and Backjudge will be under the posts as the fieldgoal attempt is from within the B20 yard line (M-11-8-d-1). The Backjudge has responsibility for whether or not the ball passes above the crossbar. (M11-8-b-4)
