SENIOR LEAGUE GAME ASSIGNMENTS

I would expect to assign officials to games for the first two weeks of the season very shortly. Please make sure your Arbiter availability is up to date. I am just waiting for Under 19 Fixture List, once received all games will be assigned officials.

NOTE: Both Gloucester and Berkshire have withdrawn from the league for 2015.

RECORDING OF MAJOR PENALTIES ON GAME DAY REPORT FORMS

A member recently raised a query about whether all major penalties should be recorded or whether some (such as pass interference) should be excluded. It seems that different practices may have become established. The Board discussed this on Saturday and have asked me to restate that ALL 15 yard penalties should be regarded as major penalties and recorded as such on the Game Report Form.

NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

Kingston Cougars

On inspecting the field on arrival, we noticed that there were inbounds lines, but no hash marks at them. Kingston managed to find some paint and mark them before kickoff time. No team area or coaching box lines - areas marked with cones instead. Only 2 balls available at kickoff time, but the third became available very shortly after kickoff once its pumping was completed. Ball boys provided very close to kickoff time. It is a very long walk (5-10 mins) from the changing room to the field.

Durham Saints

At the end of the game, officials were verbally abused by several members of the Saints' team, squad and staff.

LSBU Spartans

Game was played at Orpington RFC. Field-of-play was 80yds. End zones were 11yds. Surface was very uneven but recent dry weather meant markings very clear. Sideline hashmarks opposite pressbox. Game KO'ed 25mins late due to ambulance. Gameballs were poor and visiting team provided 3rd ball.

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: 3rd and 10 on the B40. QB A10 completes a legal forward pass to receiver A88 at the B25. A88 runs to the B4 where he fumbles the ball, which rolls into and out through the endzone. The QB was roughed on the play. Ruling?
Ruling?

Last week

Play: A's ball, 4th and goal, on B's 2. The score is A21-B26. QB A14's quick pitch from the Team B 4 yard line is muffed by A33 on Team B's 6 yard line. The ball rolls into Team B's end zone where A74 recovers. Time expired in the fourth quarter during the down. Ruling?

Ruling: Touchdown. A's ball, try, on B's 3. QB A14 threw a backward pass to A33. QB A14 did not fumble. A74 legally recovered the ball in B's end zone resulting in a touchdown. Similarly, if a backward pass is muffed and goes forward and out of bounds between the goal lines, the ball is next put in play at the hash mark on the yardline where the ball went out of bounds. The final score is A27-B26 if neither team scores on the try. QB A14 will probably take a knee.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: 1st and 10 at A's 4 yard line. On a 7 man crew, how should the two wing officials work together to ensure that team A's goal line is covered?
Answer next issue...

Last week

Play: In the event that an official throws a flag for a foul, and that flag falls in the wrong location, how should the official act to ensure the flag is moved to the right place?
Answer: M-19-1-c. If your flag falls on the wrong spot, move it to the correct spot. Move the flag with authority - don't try to nudge it with your foot in the hope that no one will notice!
