HEAD OF MENTORING

Given recent feedback from members who have mentored in recent years, the board has agreed to implement a new Head of Mentoring role. This role would act as the sole liaison for all Mentors as they guide trainees through the Associate process. The role will include reporting to the Director of Recruitment, however they will also work very closely with the Director of Training to ensure a consistently high level of training is delivered to all Associates.

Ideally the person in the role will have mentored themselves in the past, for an understanding of the current process.

Any questions or for a full discussion around the role, please feel free to give me a call. My number can be found on the BAFRA Membership list. Formal expressions of interest should be emailed to me at recruitment@bafra.info .The deadline for applications is Sunday 11th August.

Ollie Maskell - Director of Recruitment

NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

Bedfordshire Blackhawks (Youth)

One sideline was marked with cones, there were no goal lines or midfield line marked. Just prior to half time in the first game a player suffered a suspected neck injury so the game was suspended for two hours to wait for an ambulance.

Andrew Murrell #608

Unknown

Bournemouth Bobcats

Game played in good spirits with the away team struggling for players from the start. The Head Linesman was injured in the 1st quarter leading to the crew adjusting to three man mechanics.

Philip Hume #52

Unknown

The field was well marked, although in some cases the hash marks did not line up with the sideline marks.

Well marked 90 yard 4G field, team areas marked with cones, supplied footballs were initially under inflated but rectified prior to kickoff and the changing room was not lockable.

Phil Clarke #262

Unknown

Humber Warhawks

The changing rooms were locked on arrival, resulting in a 20 minute wait to gain entry. The officials changing rooms are too small for a 4 man crew and not lockable and are located ¼ mile from the field. The field is 100 yards long with 10 yard end-zones, however the following lines were missing: Limit Lines, Nine Yard Marks, PATmarks.

Chris Jarvis #10

Due to another event being held at the venue, there were no officials changing rooms. This was noted as part of the communication with the hosts and did not prove to be an issue with both officials arriving partly dressed in kit

Lee Taylor #183

Unknown

Cornish Sharks

The game was played on a soccer pitch with field markings for both sports marked in white. The goals were soccer goals with the uprights formed by scaffold poles strapped to the posts. This meant that the goalposts are too far apart and the crossbar is too low by rule. The inbounds hash marks were too close to the sidelines (approximately 14 yards). One ballboy was changed at half time.

Unknown

Hertfordshire Cheetahs (Youth)

Two well marked fields were provided, although, due to the withdrawal of competing team, only one was used. The fields were marked in white using some of the markings of the 11-v-11 field, so there were lots of other white markings present alongside the field markings.

Ben Griffiths #228

Unknown

London Blitz B

Changing rooms at the facility were very poor. There were pieces of wood with nails sticking out of them on the floor. The toilet in the changing room was not plumbed correctly and appeared to be leaking. Upon arrival at the game the field was not marked (resolved by the team upon request). The field was marked out in metres rather than yards. The chains were 10 yards long. Kick off time advertised on arbiter was not the same as the one that the teams were both aware of.

Dean Wright #553

Unknown

London Hornets

A full quota of official's assistants were not available until just before kick off. One was changed early in the first quarter. 90 yard field, NFL hash marks, no limit lines and team areas were painted to the 20 yard line.

90 yard field, NFL hash marks, no limit lines, one ball very worn, and team areas were painted to the 20 yard line.

James Ford-Bannister #479

Unknown

Maidstone Pumas

Maidstone were playing at a new venue, Aylesford Bulls Rugby Club, do not use the postcode for this location on sat nav otherwise this takes you to the wrong side of the field, instead use club hall road. The endzones were of minimum required length, there were NFL hash marks, and no 9-yard marks. Maidstone game management said this would be rectified for their next home game..

Richard Moger #472

Unknown

Manchester Titans

Officials’ changing room had no showers. Had to use showers in other building. 80yd field with 7yd endzones.

Shawn Sombati #15

28th July 2019 v Tamworth Phoenix

80 yard field, reasonably well marked although not all the sideline hash marks were equally spaced.

Lee Taylor #183

Unknown

Northants Knights

Field was marked with NFL-width hash marks, both the inbound and sideline hash marks were marked in Red, and the field lines were marked in white. Team areas also marked out to the 20 yard line at each end. Good gameday management, including drinks waiting for us in the changing room upon arrival.

Andrew Murrell #608

Unknown

Nottingham Caesars

One member of the chain crew needed to be replaced due to being inattentive.

Paul Todd #289

28th July 2019 v Shropshire Revolution

Portsmouth Dreadnoughts

With 1 minute to go in the second quarter, there was an injury which required the player to attend hospital. As he was held on the field for some time, it was agreed between the referee and the two head coaches to take the half time break and then play the last minute of the first half before turning around and starting the second half. The half time interval lasted for 20 minutes and no extra time was lost in delay.

David Knight #135

28th July 2019 v Oxford Saints

Salisbury City Marauders (Youth)

Fields were slightly too long, 12 yard lines located in the wrong place, one field had a tight enclosure but hard surfaces were padded if too close. Changing rooms not lockable.

Oliver Maskell #221

Unknown

Sheffield Giants

100 yard field. Numbers were present but at 4 yards. The boundary line of the cricket field ran diagonally across the field but didn't cause any problems. No limit lines.

Andrew Lovell #559

Philip Hume #52

28th July 2019 v Hertfordshire Cheetahs

Exceptionally well-marked 90 yard field. Posts were about half a yard behind the end line. Team areas slightly too long. Chain crew needed constant supervision. One ball person changed at half time.

Michael Hansford #594

Unknown

South Wales Warriors

The coaching boxes were too close to the sidelines, with the players boxes marked out behind this. Both head coaches agreed to use the players boxes instead. The changing room was not lockable. Plaudits to gameday management, who provided plenty of drinks for the officials throughout, which was greatly appreciated.

Amir Brooks #593

4th August 2019 v Cornish Sharks

Sussex Thunder

90 yard field marked in blue. The endzones were marked as 12 yards and the end lines were too close to the fence. There were white lines from the English football markings and this was actually 10 yards from the goal line so this was used as the endline.

David Knight #135

28th July 2019 v         Berkshire Renegades

Tamworth Phoenix

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: Team A, 4th and 7 at the A-8.  Punter A85 receives the snap and runs to his right. At the A-6, A85 kicks the ball, which bounds along the ground to the B-48 where it is fielded by B1, who returns it to the B-49 where he is tackled by A19. During the kick, A19 steps out of bounds on his own at the A-17.

Ruling?

Last week

Play: Team A, 4th & 11 at the B-35 with the ball at position 5. QB A4 scrambles toward the press box side of the field. B17 grabs and restricts A88 in the middle of the field at the B-24 just as A4 releases the pass from the B-41. B56 leaps up at the B-35 and intercepts the pass and lands at the B-35 where he is tackled by A4 at the B-41. The Back Judge has a flag down on this play.

Ruling: Team A, 4th & 1 at B-25, ball is spotted at position 5. B24 commits a foul for defensive holding when he grabs and restricts A88 (9-3-4-d), however, it does not carry an automatic first down for Team A as the pass did not cross the neutral zone (9-3-5) nor is it a foul for DPI (7-3-8) for the same reason as the ball did not cross the neutral zone. The foul will be enforced 10 yards from the previous spot.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: How should a Linesman and Linejudge work together during a penalty enforcement to ensure that yardage is marked off correctly.  (Note that this is not a free kick play).

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: 1st and 10 for Team A on the Team A 20 yard line, a 4-man crew are covering the game.  Team A run a draw play and catch out the entire defence as well as the two wing officials.  Running back A23 vanishes into the pile, and then emerges from the other side with only Free Safety B20 chasing him down.  A23 runs towards the sideline and the Team B endzone, with the wing official on his side of the field trailing behind.  B20 tackles A23 in the field of play very close to the pylon, and then out of bounds with the pylon being displaced during the action.  It is unclear if a touchdown has been scored.  What should the officials do?

Answer: Although as officials we strive to always make the right call, there are times when on a 4-man crew it is impossible to have all angles covered.  The wing official covering that goal line should confer with other officials to determine if anyone has positive knowledge as to the result of the play, and if none is coming then the officials should make use of the When in Doubt principles.  When in doubt, the ball is dead in the field rather than a touchdown (M6.1.23), therefore the ball should be spotted on in the field of play, Team A will have 1st and goal.  Remember: “No cheap Touchdowns”.
