Outstanding items from previous weeks

New this week

Play: Team A's ball, 4th and 4, on the Team B 40 yard line. A83 catches A17's legal forward pass, fumbles on Team B's 38 yard line and the ball rolls out of bounds on Team B's 34 yard line. Team B were offside at the snap.

Last week

Play: A's ball, 4th and 16, on A's 1. The score is A14-B13. A4's punt is caught by B29 on A's 26 after a valid fair catch signal. During the down, B63 blocked A44 in the back on A's 28 and A74 blocked B95 below the waist on A's 22. Time expired in the fourth quarter during the down.

Ruling: A's ball, 4th and 16, on A's 1. Extend the period. The ball becomes dead when caught by B29 after the fair catch signal. Team B could decline the penalty for A74's block below the waist foul (10-1-4-exp-1 & 10-1-4-exp-2). Team A then would have the option of accepting or declining the penalty for B63's block in the back foul. If accepted, it would be B's ball, 1st and 10, on A's 38. If declined, the game would be over. Team B will accept offsetting fouls. The down will be replayed (3-2-3-a-2). The Team A QB need only take the snap and go to a knee.

New this week

Game Situation: If there are a few seconds remaining in the game and the game clock is running, the responsibility for whether or not the ball is snapped is solely that of the on-field timekeeper in all circumstances.  True or False?

Answer next issue…

Last week

Game Situation: 1st and 10 on the A30.  A89 runs a post pattern on the Line Judge's side of the field and is held by B33 at the A40 yard line.  Quarterback A13 then throws a legal forward pass to A82 on the Linesman's side of the field.  A82 is downed on the A38.  Ruling?

Answer: Downfield on passing plays where a legal forward pass crosses the line of scrimmage, everywhere is the point of attack - a foul on an eligible receiver can occur anywhere.  Defensive holding by B33, 10 yards from the previous spot and a first down.  A's ball, 1st and 10 on the A40.  (M-3-3-2-a, 9-3-4-d & 9-3-5)
