END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: Team A's ball, 2nd and 6, on Team B's 25 yard line. There are 23 seconds remaining in the second quarter and the clock is running. QB A18 intends to "spike" the ball immediately after the snap but muffs the ball. A33 catches the loose ball and immediately throws it forward directly into the ground.

Ruling?

Last week

Play:  Team A's ball, free kick, at the Team A 35. The kicked ball bounces once on Team A's 43 yard line. The ball is then in the air and beyond the Team A 45 yard line A66 bats the ball backwards to Team A's 45 yard line where a Team A player recovers it and is downed.

Ruling: Team A's ball, 1st and 10, on the Team A 40 yard line. The ball crossed Team B's restraining line. Therefore, Team A may legally recover the ball but may not advance. The bat by A66 is legal since the ball was batted backward.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: Generally, a ball should be spotted either 'nose on', 'tail on' or equidistant between two yard lines. In what situation should the ball be spotted with greater accuracy?

Answer next issue...

Last week

Game Situation: On a 3-man crew, which official should take responsibility for actions against the snapper on field goal and try attempts?

Answer: M-23-6-3.  The Linesman is responsible for action against the snapper and may come infield after the ball is snapped to better observe this.
