END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: Team A line up for a field goal attempt at the Team B 10 yard line.  The ball is legally kicked low and hits the Umpire on the head.  The ball loops up into the air and passes between the posts & over the crossbar without touching anyone else or the ground.  Ruling?

Ruling?

Last week

Play:  Team A's ball, 3rd and 8, on Team A's 9 yard line. A16's attempted quick kick is low and hits A65 in the back without crossing the line of scrimmage. The ball rolls toward the sideline and appears to be out of bounds. After an adequate delay, the Linesman blows his whistle when no player attempts to recover the ball which is at rest on A's 7. The punt never crossed the line of scrimmage at any point.

Ruling:  Team B's ball, 1st and goal, on Team A's 7 yard line. If a scrimmage kick goes out of bounds between the goal lines or comes to rest inbounds and no player attempts to secure it, the ball becomes dead and belongs to the receiving team at the dead ball spot (6-3-7). The fact that it is 3rd down makes no difference, the continuity of downs is broken and Team B will get the ball (5-1-4-d).

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation:  4th and 7 from Team A’s 15-yard line near the end of the 1st quarter. Team A line up to punt facing a very strong headwind with punter A8 standing on the Team A goal line. The long snap is wayward and the ball rolls into the end zone where it stops. B55 is moving to recover the ball when A8 holds B55 in the end zone. B98 muffs the ball causing it to roll across the end line. Time expires in the 1st quarter during the down. A8 is guilty of holding. As the hold occurred in the end zone, should the officials should regard enforcement of the penalty as 'obvious'?

Answer next issue...

Last week

Game Situation: On a 7 man crew the Sidejudge is covering receiver A88 who is running a post pattern directly towards him.  Just as Quarterback A5 releases a pass towards A80 who is running a different route on the other side of the field, defensive back B20 holds A88 and restricts his movement for several seconds.  Ruling?

Answer:  Though everywhere is considered the point of attack on a pass play before the pass is thrown (MM 3-3-2-a), once the ball has been thrown to the other side of the field, defensive holding should not be thrown unless it is a clear attempt to restrict a player who is making a lead block for the ball carrier (MM 3-3-2-f & MM 3-3-2-g).  In this case, the Sidejudge should most likely not call B20 for holding, unless the play comes towards his side of the field and B20's restriction prevents A88 from blocking.
