GRAHAM WESTWOOD - #314

I was contacted by the son-in-law of Graham Westwood who I am sad to report passed away two years ago. Longer-serving members may remember Graham who worked games involving the Birmingham Bulls and others in the later part of the 1980s. The family have asked if our members have any photographs of Graham in uniform. As we wore shirt numbers in those days, he should be easy to identify by his number, 314.

If anyone is able to assist, please send a scan of the photo to me (or if you can’t do that, send me the photo and I will scan it and return it to you). I will then forward the photo(s) to the family.

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give in this matter.

Leeds Bobcats

80 yard field marked in blue with rugby lines in white. Not sure which lines were correct as there was a definite angle between the differing lines but I was assured that the AF markings were correct.

Wembley Stallions

Chaining room too small for a 7 man crew.  Field was excellently marked and perfect for football.  Hot day game played in a great spirit by both teams.

90 yard field was well marked. Athletics markings in the same colour were present, but did not cause confusion.

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: Team A's ball on the A40 yard line, 4th and 6. A4's punt is caught by B49 on Team B's 18 yard line. B49 returns the ball to Team A's 49 yard line where he is tackled. Team A's formation was illegal at the snap. B87 held A44 on Team B's 30 yard line during the kick. Assume that Team B elects any option that allows them to keep the ball.

Ruling?

Last week

Play:  A's ball on B's 3, try. The score is A20-B21. Time expired in the 4th quarter during A39's touchdown run. QB A17 completes a forward pass to A88 in B's end zone. The pass was thrown from B's 2.

Ruling: The pass by A17 was an illegal forward pass since the pass was from beyond the neutral zone (7-3-2-a). The penalty is five yards from the spot of the pass and a loss of down. The loss of down provision means that the try ends (8-3-3-c-2). The game is over. Team B wins. The final score is A20-B21.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: 1st and 10.  Quarterback A4 attempts a forward pass to wide receiver A87 who is near to the sidelines.  A87 leaps into the air and catches the ball, as his first foot comes down toe hits the ground inbounds before his heel comes down on out of bounds line.  Ruling?

Answer next issue...

Last week

Play: 3rd and 5 on the team A 35.  With the ball ready for play and time running out on the 25 second clock, Team A break from the huddle and rush to make a quick substitution while simultaneously lining up for the play.  How should the umpire react in this situation?

Answer:  The umpire should immediately move over the ball to prevent the snap and allow Team B to make substitutions to match up with Team A.  If the play clock runs out before Team A are able to snap the ball then either there will be either a delay of game on Team B for not completing its substitutions promptly, or delay of game on Team A for causing the play clock to expire.  See 3-5-2-e and AR 3-5-2-IX.
