Issue 14/17                                                                                28th April 2017

BAFRA Newsflash

We are now in the examination period.

The Exam may be found here:  Before attempting the exam, please read all of the rubric on the first two pages. This will answer quite a number of the queries that people may have. In particular, please note the two new entries in the section “Unless specifically stated otherwise, assume the following for ALL questions”. If you have a query about a question, please contact the e-mail given in the rubric for advice. All enquiries will receive an answer from the Chairman of the Examination Committee.

Remember, this is a test of rules and mechanics knowledge not the semantics of the English language and there are no trick questions.

As a reminder, all qualified members must sit the exam to retain their qualified status. Associate, affiliate and overseas restricted members are not required to sit the exam but you are welcome to should you wish to do so. In particular, it will allow associate members and their mentors to assess their progress and help identify areas for further training.

At midday on 26th April, the following members had returned their exam papers:

Mark Allen, Joannis Argyiou, Mark Edwards, Ben Gatsby, Ronnie Gaffin, Muz Gibson, John Griffin, Steve Hall, David Hewitt, Gareth Hughes, Jon Ikins, Anton Jarbol, Chris Jarvis, Mike LeFevre, Ollie Maskell, Lee Mills, John Roberts, Anthony Tagg, Lee Taylor, Pete Thom, Mark Wilson, Brian Yates.

If you sent yours and believe I should have received it by the above date and time, please contact me. All papers whether returned by post or electronically are acknowledged.

A question came up at the AGM about the youngest fully qualified official BAFRA has ever had. Such records are not retained going back to 1984 so it was agreed I would ask via Newsflash. Not counting junior members (who could only qualify at junior level), does anyone know of a member who fully qualified before their 20 th birthday and, if so, what their age was when they qualified? If you are not certain of the age, a best estimate in years and months would be a good start. Just let me know by e-mail. Thanks for any assistance you are able to provide.

This has produced a number of e-mails which have demonstrated qualifying under 19 is not that rare an occurrence.  Thanks to all who have replied. So far the youngest is just over 18 years and 3 months. I make one final request – can anyone beat that?

Paul Sutton

Can all trainees please note. The address to send your completed logbook is BAFRA, 33 Stoneland Avenue, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, SG18 0EA.  All pages of the logbook must be completed including pages 14 to 16 and signed by your mentor.  Please also remember to include your shirt size and to apply the correct postage as applying the wrong postage may delay matters.

Congratulations to Andrew Swift on completing all of the requirements necessary to become Qualified.

Thanks to Paul Todd and all those who are helping with Andrew’s training.

New this week

Daryus Linch

Bristol Apache

Player ran after an opponent, jumped on his back and repeatedly struck him in his head. This started a brawl, after which #15 was ejected.

14/05/17 v Jurassic Coast Raptors

Sean Wilcock

Gateshead Senators

Threw a punch at an opponent.

30/04/17 v Morecambe Storm

Previous weeks

Josh Cooper

Coventry Jets

And after the play was complete, the player struck an opponent in the side of the head with a closed fist.

30/04/17 v Leicester Falcons

New this week

Doncaster Mustangs

The KO was delayed 10 minutes as the medical cover was late arriving.

Murray Gibson #268

07/05/17 v Newcastle Vikings

Shropshire Revolution

Field well marked except for javelin & shot put markings across one half. There is an immovable metal storage unit at one end of the field (~11 feet from the endline) however this was adequately padded by game management.

Jed Brookes-Lewis #395

04/06/17 v Humber Warhawks

Gateshead Senators

Other markings on the field, also in white, no team area marked on one sideline. Down box doesn't show 1&2 correctly, chains broke several times during the game. 1 change of chain crew.

Liam Wooton #478

11/06/17 v Carlisle Sentinels

Swindon Storm

90 yard field. Team areas reached the 20 yardline instead of the 25. Hashmarks were also in a big curve, so the Umpire used the pylons to position himself. Field surface was very dry and hard.

Viktor Janvari #63

25/06/17 v Torbay Trojans

Solent Thrashers

No three yard marks, well marked out field, lines in yellow. Plane of the cross bar is not in line with the end line. No other issues.

David Knight #135

30/04/17 v Ouse Valley Eagles

Humber Warhawks

No limit lines, no nine yard marks, no 3 yard mark. 7 minute delay to start the second half due to an injury. Fifteen minute injury delay near the end of the fourth quarter.

07/05/17 v Staffordshire Surge

Glasgow Tigers

Very small changing room shared with soccer officials. Team areas marked too close to sideline however rectified with cones prior to officials arrival. Some hash marks were more/less than 1 yd. 1 crossbar had slight bend.

Daniel Johnston #347

14/05/17 v Clyde Valley Blackhawks

Bournemouth Bobcats

Holes from soccer goals had to be covered. NFL hash marks. Top of numbers at 13 yards. Fencing approximately 12 feet from the sideline had to be padded.

Philip Hume #52

11/06/17 v Maidstone Pumas

Maidstone Pumas

Well marked 90-yard field missing limit lines and with a main line marked 5 yards into each end zone. Goals too wide and numbers too small and not always marked at 10-yard intervals. Changing room had no facilities but did have a separate lockable side room for the crew to store kit in.

Tim Ockendon #481

07/05/17 v Hertfordshire Cheetahs

Outstanding items from previous weeks

Cornish Sharks

Field only 80 yards long with 7 yard End Zones. No numbers or 9 yard marks. Team Area marked to 20 yard line so cones used to show correct end point. Other (Rugby) marking also in white but faded enough not to cause confusion.

Albert Lambert #461

21/05/17 v Torbay Trojans

Torbay Trojans

Last week’s team area issue had been corrected - so well done to the team. Grass was a little long but field was well marked. Field is tight in the surroundings and game was stopped on a couple of occasions as a small child encroached too close to the field.

David Knight #135

14/05/17 v Swindon Storm

London Warriors

Field marked in blue lines apart from the midfield line and end lines. No numbers or 9-yard marks. No coaching boxes or team areas marked. No limit lines. Changing rooms not lockable.

Pete Parsons #321

30/04/17 v Farnham Knights

Sandwell Steelers

Very well marked field in yellow. The two three yard marks were found to be missing on arrival - however Game Management corrected this when highlighted to them. Chain Crew were excellent - best that we have had provided to us in a long time.

Krister Halvorsen #217

07/05/17 v Leicester Falcons

Carlisle Sentinels

The changing room was very small, it was cramped with 4 officials however the team did say that in future other changing facilities will be available.

07/05/17 v Leeds Bobcats

Hastings Conquerors

Played at Hastings & Bexhill RFC. Well marked 90-yard field missing only numbers & limit lines. Coaching line depth so bad as to make it unusable. Changing rooms cramped, lacking facilities and not lockable.

Tim Ockendon #481

25/06/17 v Portsmouth Dreadnoughts
