END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A's ball, 4th and 8, on the Team B 30 yard line. A9's low field goal attempt is blocked by B57 on Team B's 28 yard line. A42 recovers at the Team B 34 yard line and advances to the Team B 21 yard line, where he is downed.

Ruling?

Last week

Play:  Team A's ball, 4th and 16, on the Team A 30. A6's punt is blocked. The ball is rolling on Team A's 14 yard line when B83 bats the ball forwards to prevent A6 from recovering the ball. The ball hits Team A's goal line pylon. Assume that the penalty is accepted. Ruling? Clock?

Ruling: A's ball, 4th and 6, on A's 40. The clock starts on the snap. B83 commits an illegal batting foul when he bats the loose ball forward (9-4-1-c).  The penalty is 10 yards from the basic spot, which is the previous spot (10-2-2-c-3 & 10-2-2-d-4). The impetus on the ball when it hit the pylon came from the bat by B83 (8-7-2-b-1), so it would be a touchback if the penalty were declined.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: A34 is leaving the field as part of a substitution.  The player is 6 yards from his sideline when he removes his helmet, he then walks slowly into his team area.  Ruling?

Answer next issue...

Last week

Play: During the coin toss, the Referee, Umpire (and deep wing officials on a 7 man crew) are in the centre of the field with the players.  Where should the wing officials and the Back Judge be positioned during this time?

Answer: M-8-4-3.  The Line Judge and Back Judge shall stand on the press box side of the field, one on each 30 yard line.  The Linesman shall be positioned on the opposite side of the field to the Line Judge, also on the 30 yard line.  The officials should be prepared to watch players not participating in the coin toss and escort players out to the 9 yard marks if required.  Pre-game duties (such as briefing a chain crew) will take precedent over this ceremonial role.
